Chaosgraph is a collaborative artwork and refereed exhibition piece created by Alys Longley and Linda Knight, presented at Tectonics: Ngā tofu o te huarere — Conversations Beyond Human Scales, the ASLEC-ANZ Conference at Massey University (2021) and in the exhibition Let Us Drink The New Wine Together, MAC, Chile, 2022.

The work thinks with stone — with geological time, lithic matter, and the vast scales of the non-human world that dwarf and outlast human presence. Operating at the edge of what can be mapped or measured, Chaosgraph proposes drawing, marking, and diagramming as practices that reach toward what exceeds them: the deep time of rock formations, the slow movements of the earth, the scales at which human categories of meaning begin to dissolve.

The title holds two ideas in tension — chaos and graph, the unmappable and the act of mapping — suggesting that to chart something is never simply to capture it, but always also to encounter the limits of capture. The work extends Longley’s broader research into cartography as a creative and critical practice, and into the possibilities of art as a form of thinking that moves beyond the boundaries of language and discipline.
