Alys Longley is an Aotearoa | New Zealand-based interdisciplinary performance maker, choreographer, and writer, and Professor in the Dance Studies Programme at the University of Auckland. She works with choreography and creative writing as expanded fields, and has collaborated closely with scientists, geographers, poets, and visual artists. Her interests span practice-led research, performance writing, interdisciplinary projects, art and ecology, and narrative research, with work performed in Aotearoa | New Zealand, Australia, Germany, Sweden, the UK, USA, Chile, and Portugal.

She is the author of the books The Foreign Language of Motion (2014) and Radio Strainer (2016), published by Winchester University Press, as well as Smudge Skittle: A Little Inventory of Resources Entangling Creative Practice Research and Writing (2018). She also co-edited Artistic Approaches to Cultural Mapping: Activating Imaginaries and Means of Knowing (Routledge, 2018) and Undisciplining Dance in Nine Movements and Eight Stumbles (Cambridge Scholars Press, 2018).

With 20 years of experience creating live performance, artist books, installations, and international collaborations, she has led major projects connecting international visual and performance artists across museums, theatres, and virtual spaces, engaging an in-process methodology she describes as mistranslation studies.
