Mistranslation Laboratory is a collaborative studio and research environment through which the independent practices of Alys Longley and Jeffrey Holdaway intersect. Working across performance, writing, sound, visual art, and production, the laboratory supports projects that move between Aotearoa, South America, and digital space. Rather than functioning as a collective identity, it provides a framework for exchange, enabling ideas, methods, and materials to travel between distinct artistic practices and collaborative works.
Alys Longley is a New Zealand-based interdisciplinary performance maker, choreographer, and writer. She works with choreography and creative writing as expanded fields, and has collaborated closely with scientists, geographers, poets, and visual artists. Her interests span practice-led research, performance writing, interdisciplinary projects, art and ecology, and narrative research, with work performed across New Zealand, Australia, Germany, the UK, Chile, USA and Portugal.
Jeffrey Holdaway is an Auckland-based artist working at the intersection of moving image, audio production, music, and graphic art. Over more than twenty years, his work has spanned location recording, live event audio, producing, mixing, and sound design for documentary and theatre projects, alongside visual art in watercolour and drawing. He has used these techniques for theatre, event design, and graphic art projects.
